Sugar cravings are rampant these days leaving a lot wondering if there are any supplements that can stop cravings.  Yes, there are!

One of the most popular questions I get isn’t what should I eat or is ________ (fill in the blank good/bad) but instead it’s how can I stay on track with healthy eating habits.

Enter supplements that stop cravings quickly and naturally.

Supplements are sometimes necessary and mandatory to stop cravings because sugar is 8 times more addictive than drugs like crack cocaine.  Sugar isn’t necessarily sweet either, cravings for refined carbs are sugar in the body even if they’re not sweet.  If you have cravings for chips, crackers, baked goods/bread, pasta, rice, fries, or any other starch, alcohol, or sweet coffee drinks, my supplement recommendations will help you.

When it comes to eating healthy it can be very difficult to resist sugar cravings even though you decide to cut sugar and carbs out of your diet.  A TON of my clients come to me after struggling with sugar and carb cravings for years. There are some supplements that can stop cravings quickly and naturally, making it easy to make healthy choices.

There are different types or categories of supplements to consider when it comes to stopping sugar cravings.  Each ‘type’ addresses a different root cause of cravings.  There are 12 things that cause sugar cravings and the following supplements tackle all of the root causes,

First, I’m going to start with basic supplementation support.  Next, I’ll go through herbal and neurotransmitter supplementation options that can stop physical and mental cravings.  So think of these supplements in ‘tiers’.

The supplements found in tier 1 and are foundational, meaning ‘start here’ because everyone can benefit from my Tier 1 recommendations because they prevent cravings and support the body in other ways.  The other tiers (2 & 3) won’t be as effective (or even necessary) if you aren’t getting what you need in Tier 1.

The supplements in Tier 2 help stop physical causes of cravings over and above Tier 1.  So if you have strong physical cravings, use Tier 1 & 2.

Tier 3 helps stop mental and emotional cravings.  So if your sugar cravings are mental or are triggered by emotions, add in Tier 3.  And if necessary, Tier 4.

TIER 1

FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS FOR SUGAR CRAVINGS

 

Nutrients & probiotics are necessary to prevent cravings from happening in the first place, so it makes sense to start there to build a foundation of support for the body.  Plus, essential nutrients and probiotics are necessary for other metabolic functions that will benefit you in lots of other ways, like boosting immunity and helping the body balance and heal.  So before taking something a craving specific supplement, its best to start here to prevent cravings and support the body more… and to repair damage done by sugary, processed foods and drinks.

 

A multivitamin-multimineral supplement

A multivitamin-multimineral can help prevent cravings by addressing potential nutrient deficiencies that may contribute to imbalances in the body. By providing a broad spectrum of essential vitamins and minerals, it ensures that the body’s nutritional needs are met, reducing the likelihood of signaling cravings for specific foods to fulfill missing nutrients. Additionally, key nutrients such as chromium, magnesium, and B vitamins support glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and neurotransmitter function, helping to regulate blood sugar levels and mood, which can influence cravings. They help maintain a healthy balance of gut microbiota, regulating digestion and nutrient absorption, which can curb cravings arising from gut imbalances. You can’t get the benefits of the vitamins and minerals if you’re not absorbing them.  Probiotics ensure you’re able to abosorb nutrients and prevent issues in other ways.  Probiotics also influence appetite-regulating hormones, such as leptin and ghrelin, potentially moderating cravings and feelings of satiety.  Additionally, probiotics ferment dietary fiber to produce short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which may suppress appetite and stabilize blood sugar levels, reducing the desire for sugary foods. Their anti-inflammatory properties and impact on the gut-brain axis further contribute to mood regulation and potentially diminish cravings driven by emotional factors.

TIER 2 

HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS FOR SUGAR CRAVINGS

 

Berberine

Berberine, a compound found in various plants, helps stop cravings in a multifaceted way.  Berberine helps by reducing cravings, particularly for sugar. It appears to achieve this by improving insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism, modulating gut microbiota, influencing neurotransmitter activity, exerting anti-inflammatory effects, and enhancing metabolic health.  Berberine supplementation offer a natural, holistic approach to managing cravings and restoring balance in the body for overall wellness that helps prevent cravings and other metabolic issues, too.  This is a great option to get started because it covers a lot of bases.

This is the Berberine Supplement that I recommend.

 

Banaba Leaf

Banaba leaf extract, containing corosolic acid, offers several potential benefits in curbing cravings, particularly for sugar and other non-sweet carbohydrates. It works by regulating blood sugar levels through enhancing glucose uptake in cells and improving insulin sensitivity, thus preventing fluctuations that often trigger sugar cravings.  It can also inhibit carbohydrate-metabolizing enzymes, helping to regulate blood sugar levels further. Some evidence suggests it can influence appetite-regulating hormones to reduce appetite and cravings for sugary foods. Moreover, its antioxidant properties contribute to overall well-being, potentially alleviating cravings associated with stress or imbalance.  This is a good option to use in conjunction with berberine if you have strong cravings and feel like you’re always hungry, or are an emotional eater.

This is the Banaba Leaf that I recommend.

TIER 3 

NEUROTRANSMITTER SUPPORT SUPPLEMENTS FOR SUGAR CRAVINGS

5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan)

5-HTP is a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation and appetite control.  5-HTP also helps raise serotonin levels in the brain.  Having enough seratonin can stop cravings.  Since serotonin helps regulate mood and behavior, 5-HTP can have a positive effect on sleep, mood, anxiety, appetite, and pain sensation.  I recommend 5-HTP supplements to my clients that emotionally crave and eat sugar (and other carbs) because it helps stop the mental urge to eat.  As a bonus, it also helps put you in a good mood and sleep better which can stop cravings in other ways.  The other supplements listed above help stop the physical urges to eat.

If you have emotional cravings to sugar and/or a low, depressed mood, and/or aren’t sleeping well, then I recommend this 5-HTP.

Those are the baseline supplements I recommend most (listed above), because they stop cravings quickly and naturally and also tend to address the most common causes of cravings, namely deficiencies and blood sugar, hormone, and gut imbalances.

BUT another common cause of cravings are pathogens in the gut.

 

TIER 4 

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR SUGAR CRAVINGS

 

If pathogens or symptoms of pathogens are present, Tier 4 Supplements are necessary to stop cravings in a lot of cases.  Pathogens include harmful bacteria, protozoa, amoebas, candida, mold, viruses, and parasites (flukes & worms, etc.)
